Preemie v Newborn clothes

I got out some of Austin's old baby clothes yesterday, and I wanted you to see just how small Austin really was when he was born. The outfit on the left is a newborn size for babies 5-8 pounds. The blue one on the right is a preemie outfit for babies up to 5 pounds. Austin was wearing the preemie outfit when he was 5 weeks old. It wasn't until then that he was actually able to wear clothes. To give you an idea of comparison, Austin's arm fit perfectly in the sleeves of the preemie outfit which measure slightly longer than my pointer finger. If you think he was small at 5 weeks old, you should have seen him when he was born. He was less than half that size. It is hard to remember back that far, and he is wrapped up in a blanket in most of the pictures we have. The other pictures we have are of him in the isolette, where there wasn't really a good point of reference. So, for all of you pregnant ladies, Austin wore the blue outfit on the left when he was about 34 weeks gestation. That should give you an idea about how big your little one is at that stage of development. I'll post some actual pictures of Austin in those two outfits later so you can what he looked like in them.

I was going through the boys clothes today getting ready to pack up and I pulled out some of their preemie clothes! Isn't it amazing, how we thought they were so "big" in them (in comparison to what they were at birth) - and now those clothes look so tiny!!

How long was Austin wearing preemie clothes? I think the boys started wearing all newborn clothes around 6-8 weeks.

Austin was just starting to wear newborn clothes at Christmas, so he was about three months old then. He grew really quickly when he was little. He started out at only 2 pounds 8 ounces, but he gained about an ounce a day (2 pounds per month). He was over six pounds when he came home from the NICU.
