I attended an all day seminar at Southern today. It was very edifying, so I thought I would share 6 things I learned from the day:
Session #1: Decorating on a Shoestring Budget- When looking for affordable bookcases, ask the expensive furniture stores if they have any scratched or discounted items. Nice pieces of slightly marred furniture can often be obtained at bargain prices. We are definitely going to try this helpful tip!
Session #2: Dr. Russell Moore- Dean of Theology- Men and women are created differently. Man is outwardly focused (caring for the family by working outside the home). Woman is inwardly focused (looking to her husband for leadership and to her children as she nurtures them). We should not expect our husbands to be constantly inwardly focused on the home because it is not how they are designed.
Session #3: Helping those with Depression- Exercise and being outside help fight depression and melancholy. Also, organizing your surroundings can help as well.
Lunch: I ate lunch with a Korean pastor's wife and was greatly encouraged. She told me that in Korea, they eat a big sit down meal for lunch. Our chikfila and brownie would have been just a "snack" in her country. She also thought that we cook with too much salt and with a very "simple" cooking style. I agreed with her and confessed that I don't know how to cook very well myself. Asian ladies definitely have a finer art of cooking than we do in my opinion.
Session #4: Cooking demonstration- You can keep cooked pasta in a bag in the fridge for up to 10 days, and it will still be good. You can also freeze it. We learned how to make an ice cream cake and an awesome fajita casserole. I'm going to try the casserole out very soon.
Session #5: Communication skills in marriage- Men and women think differently. Men have slightly larger space for facts in their brains, but a woman's brain can withstand starvation longer than a man's. Mrs. York joked that when her husband isn't making any sense, she asks, "you need something to eat?" We all thought that was hilarious.
